We are currently seeking energetic Teacher Aides to work collaboratively with all staff to provide support to students as per the students' IEP and according to a prescribed plan. Our classrooms are small so you truly get to work hands on with the students. CHK will work with eligible new hires to get their certification within the first 3-6 months of employment.

The Certified Teacher Assistant participates as a member of the instructional staff within a treatment team model to facilitate the learning of all students in the area of vocational/academic skills, daily living skills, language/communication, recreation and community functioning.

Teaching Assistants will receive $400 sign on bonus after 90 days of continuous employment


Position Responsibilities:

In a manner consistent with CHK's Mission Statement and applicable laws and regulations, an employee in this position shall:


  • Works with students under the direction of classroom teacher
  • Assists students with school resources
  • Escorts students to and from lunch, specials, and other activities
  • Shares responsibility for effective classroom operations and student management
  • Assists teachers in planning and executing instruction, assessing student progress, administering assessments, and managing student behavior
  • Fill in for teachers' absence, may be asked to carry out teaching duties
  • Reviews and carries out services and accommodations as outlined in students' Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
  • Communicates with colleagues, supervisors, parents, and residential staff as needed regarding student progress
  • Performs other duties as assigned by administration such as breakfast duty, ISS duty, and bus duty
  • Reports incidents as needed and in compliance with school protocol
  • Implements Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques effectively and consistently
  • Participates in and promotes the school's Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program
  • Attends all trainings and meetings as required by administration

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to speak, read, and writes English fluently, which allows full communication with agency staff and 3rd parties
  • Ability to use sound judgment while following agency policies, practices and procedures
  • professional demeanor, patience, empathy and a positive attitude while possessing a strong desire to help others
  • Problem solving skills and commitment to the team is required
  • Bilingual Spanish is helpful but not required

Education, Training and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current NYS Certification in Education; Special Education preferred or desire to work towards certification
  • Experience working with students with various cultural backgrounds

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom
  • Must be able to list up to 45 pounds at a time
  • Must be able to kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull to assist and teach children throughout the day
