Position Summary:

Children's Home of Kingston we are a specialized school for young men grades 4-12. Our program is designed with a therapeutic program in mind, using academically researched practices including restorative approaches and social-emotional learning skills. We work in close contact with our youth's home school districts to develop learning and behavior plans (if needed) to meet student's academic goals. The Grove Street Academy offers emotionally and learning-disabled students a structured, personalized, educational setting. Prescriptive and diagnostic strategies are developed to help students achieve educational goals established by New York State Standards and the student's Individual Education Program. The High School Math Teacher will coordinate and provide developmentally appropriate educational services to students whose abilities differ from their peers. Directs, monitors, and mentors' teacher's assistants working with students who have challenging behaviors. **After 90 days of continuous employment will receive a $400 Sign On Bonus**


  • Plan and deliver engaging, effective instruction aligned with NYS Learning Standards and incorporating best practices for students with disabilities grades 9-12
  • Demonstrate mathematical concepts using models, other available technology methods, and other standard or teacher-prepared instructional aids
  • Design learning activities that will relate mathematics to the physical world
  • Evaluate each pupil's progress in mathematical knowledge and skills
  • Communicate with parents to interpret contemporary methods in teaching mathematics and with parents and school counselors to discuss the individual pupil's progress.
  • Transfer mastery of content to students by leveraging their background knowledge and experiences
  • Implement a variety of teacher strategies to facilitate learning amongst diverse learners and social justice topics
  • Uses student engagement as a core component of classroom management system.
  • Develops and differentiates instructional materials to support student learning
  • Supervises students
  • Manages student behaviors
  • Completes and submits lesson plans using school-wide format
  • Establishes effective classroom routines and assists in daily school operations
  • Reviews and enacts services and accommodations as outlined by students' Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
  • Communicates with colleagues, supervisors, parents, and residential staff as needed regarding student progress
  • Monitors student progress and provides remediation or enrichment as appropriate
  • Maintains accurate record of student performance
  • Reports incidents as needed and in accordance with office protocol
  • Participates in CSE meetings, and monitors student progress toward IEP goals
  • Completes required documentation as required by administration, including treatment team forms and BIP progress monitoring notes
  • Performs other duties as assigned by administration such as breakfast duty, bus duty, and ISS duty
  • Implements Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques effectively and consistently
  • Participates and promotes the school's Positive Behavior Interventions Supports (PBIS) program
  • Attends all trainings and meetings as required by administration

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to speak, read, and writes English fluently, which allows full communication with agency staff and 3rd
  • Ability to perform highly exacting work, complex in nature, and to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to evaluate facts, interprets results, and makes recommendations.
  • Ability to use sound judgment while following agency policies, practices and procedures.
  • Possess a valid driver license with a driving record acceptable to CHK's insurance carrier and possess the ability to drive agency vehicles to other agency sites and places for training purposes.

Education, Training and Experience:


  • Drive to improve the minds and lives of students in and out of the classroom;
  • Proven track-record of high achievement in the classroom;
  • Mastery of and enthusiasm for academic subjects;
  • Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player;
  • Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree is preferred; and
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
  • Current NYS Certification in Education; Special Education preferred
  • Experience working with students with various cultural backgrounds



Physical Demands and Work Environment:


  • Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom
  • Must be able to list up to 45 pounds at a time
  • Must be able to kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull to assist and teach children throughout the day
